Deep Field & Shallow Field Lifting Magnets

Image Caption

Are you aware there are deep field and shallow field Lifting Magnets available?

Deep field (Passive Shunting) Lifting Magnets have been used for many decades in Australia. In the last ten years shallow field (Active Shunting) Lifting Magnets have been gaining in Popularity.

To understand why we need to look at the differences and what that means in the workplace.

Deep field magnets are generally durable robust pieces of equipment, but many people are not aware that they will only lift their advertised capacity at the depth of their magnetic field.

This depth varies between sizes. An average PML 500kg magnet has a 40mm deep field. This means it is only rated to lift 500kg if the material you are handling is 40mm thick. If the material is 20mm thick this 500kg magnet is rated to lift 350kg.  A 1-tonne deep field magnet typically has a 60mm deep field, so on 20mm material thickness, it is rated to lift 350kg which is the same as a PML 500kg magnet.

A shallow field magnet rated to lift 400kg has a 12.7mm deep field so it can lift 400kg of 12.7mm material. When you are handling 20mm plate it is still rated to lift 400kg.

Interestingly, most deep field magnets are not rated to lift material less than 10mm thick while many shallow field magnets are rated on material as thin as 0.5mm thick.

So, what that means in the workplace when you are using deep field magnets, is there is more potential to mismatch the magnet to the load.

A mismatch like using a 1-tonne PML with a 60mm field to lift 15mm plate will result in the lever being very hard to actuate and very hard to turn off. The lever will be very forceful on release resulting in a risk of wrist injuries.

Furthermore, a calculation is required by the operator to ensure the magnet is rated to lift the material at the given thickness.

Using a shallow field magnet on material from 0.5mm to 25mm thick will ensure that the levers actuate in a gentle manner, reducing potential wrist injuries while reducing the risk of operator error due to misunderstanding their magnets capacity on various thickness’s.

At MSA we supply both types and are looking forward to offering advice on which type suits your requirements.

Bakery Lifting Problems Solved With Magswitch MLAY1000X4 Lifting Magnet

Image Caption

DO THE LIFTING PRACTICES IN YOUR FACTORY GIVE UNNECESSARY STRAIN TO YOUR WORKERS?

A large Sydney-based bakery (name withheld) recently contacted MSA regarding a problem they had with lifting large metal billets out of lathe chuck jaws in their maintenance workshop. The heavy 18+ kg billets were being transported by slings, a method which held many WHS risks:

  1. Unnecessary strain on staff as they bent at uncomfortable angles to remove the heavy billets.
  2. Risk of billet falling out of the sling due to insufficient holding surface area.
  3. Damage and wear to the slings posed a huge safety risk if they unexpectedly broke.
  4. Risk of billet falling out of the sling cradle due to it not being designed to hold a workpiece offset.

These slings would often lift between 20 – 500 kg of weight and although tested every 3-6 months, were still not considered the ‘best practice’ as manual loading of weights into the sling was still necessary.
The bakery researched the various types of lifting methods and concluded that the MAGSWITCH MLAY1000x4 heavy lifting magnet was the answer to their problems.

The MLAY1000x4 is a switchable magnet that has been specially designed for use in workshop environments to aid in the lifting of heavy ferrous materials, with a holding strength of up to 591 kgs (1,300 lbs) with a 3:1 SWL. It is lighter and stronger than competitive shunting switchable magnets, eliminates the strain that the slings were causing the bakery workers and greatly reduces the WHS risks that the slings held.

The customer provided MSA with the justification document in which they highlighted the benefits the MLAY1000x4 held for their applications:

  • “Far less prone to damage and failure
  • Quick and easy setup and to operate
  • Can lift vertically instead of horizontally
  • Allow slings to be kept for machined work and non-ferrous handling, reduces wear and tear on the slings
  • Latest Safety two press finger latch to activate/de-activate magnet arm (prevents unintentional switched off)”

After purchasing and installing their new Magswitch lifting magnet, the bakery workers now experience a much safer work environment, and it has increased productivity due to the decrease in time taken to lift the heavy billets.

They since have found use for the magnet loading/unloading raw materials from delivery trucks, again increasing their productivity while improving their WHS standard.

Magswitch MagDrill Wins Award!

Image Caption

Magswitch Technology’s first drilling tool has won an industry innovation award at the 2016 Annual Pro Tool Innovation Awards (PTIA)! The newly-released MagDrill has been specially designed for pipe drilling and hole cutting on flat and round material. Incorporating Magswitch Technology’s patented shallow-field magnet technology and a patent-pending pivot base, the tool effectively handles pipe inner and pipe outer with ease. Its superior grip enables it to deliver better results on thinner steel than other competitor drill bases.

This competitive category was judged by a panel of professional tradesmen on their level of innovation, power & value. The panel was made up of industrial contractors, builders and experts in the plumbing, electrical, MRO & concrete fields. The award-winning tools were described by Clint DeBoer, PTIA’s Executive Director, as “the tools that should really be in every tradesman’s toolbox”.

The PTIA judges said that “Magnetic Drill Presses are a compelling tool class by nature, and Magswitch offers features on the Disruptor 30 that are pretty attractive, it comes in under 25 lb. Anytime weight drops in a tool without sacrificing quality, it’s a good thing for the end-user. We also really like the ability to turn magnets off individually to help with setup for a tool that’s often used in less than ideal positions. Those magnets also swivel so you can work on flat or rounded surfaces without the need for an adapter plate.

Whilst this is the first time Magswitch has entered the tool category, Magswitch’s Chief Executive Officer, David Morton, was not surprised it came home with an award. Morton says that “We are very excited, but not surprised, that the Disruptor is being awarded. The MagDrill offers superior performance on round and thin material, coupling our patented shallow field magnet technology and our patent-pending pivoting base. The award is a testament to our engineers. To enter a highly competitive tool category and get it right with our first tool is a great accomplishment. Magswitch is changing the way pipe drilling and hole cutting is done.”

The Magswitch MagDrill is available in Australia from MSA Magnetics. For more information, please visit the Magdrill product page or contact us here.
